Quenton Nelson traded to Seahawks in move that could shake up the NFC West

Email : 2

The Colts have traded eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks for a 3rd-round pick in 2027, and a 5th round pick in 2028 in a move which could signal the beginning of a fire sale in Indianapolis.

Nelson, who has been the soul of the Colts’ offensive line since he was drafted No. 6 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, has been fantastic this season, but with GM Chris Ballard getting fired following the team’s loss to the Titans, it’s now on the organization to begin the process of preparing for the future. Nelson wasn’t going to be part of a team likely preparing for a rebuild, and Indianapolis decided to get something for him while they still could in the last year of his contract.

This trade is a big deal that makes an elite NFC team even stronger while the Colts continue to sink. Let’s grade it from both sides.

Grade for the Seattle Seahawks: A+

It’s not often you get an elite offensive lineman in the middle of the season who can completely reform an offense, but here we are. Dealing a 3rd and 5th round pick for an older lineman on an expiring contract might seem like an overpay on paper, but interior offensive linemen are becoming a coveted resource in the NFL as teams employ more blitzing linebackers out of the box and stunt fronts. The guard and center spots have become more valuable than offensive tackles, a flip on traditional logic — and up to this point Seattle really didn’t have an elite presence in the middle of the line.

Simply put: Nelson is a top-3 guard in all of football, gifted at both opening holes in the run game (as he did for Jonathan Taylor), and being an immovable object in the passing game to protect from those interior blitzes. Moreover, this will give the Seahawks time to sell Nelson on signing a contract extension, functionally getting a jump on free agency before it begins.

In terms of compensation, it’s really a drop in the bucket. Seattle is poised to receive five compensatory picks in the 2027 draft, one in the fourth round for losing Kenneth Walker III, and three in the fifth round. In addition, the Seahawks will receive a third-round compensatory pick for losing front office member Nolan Teasley, who became general manage of the Minnesota Vikings.

Seattle wants to win right now. They believe the door is open to win another Super Bowl, and have been emboldened following their win over the Chiefs. Getting a guard of Nelson’s caliber checks all the boxes for what they need to reach another level.

Grade for the Indianapolis Colts: B

This was a decent return for a player unlikely to re-sign in Indianapolis next season. The curious part of this deal, and why the Colts don’t grade higher, is a lack of performance escalators tied to Nelson that could push one of those picks up, depending on results.

Nelson is such a profound talent that it feels like the Colts could have gotten more by shopping him further, but seemingly took the quick offer. Getting a return is nice, but this has to sting when you lose a player of his caliber for two picks that will likely be at the ends of their respective rounds.

The trade is a massive shot across the bow for the future of the Colts. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Colts aren’t done making deals yet, which likely signifies that the team is prepared to blow everything up and fully rebuild. It’s the right move for the franchise to make, as they’ve been bashing their head against mediocrity for the last few years without seeing any postseason success, and that means Nelson is just the first domino to fall.
