The President of the Pakistan Football Federation, Mohsen Gilani, has officially announced plans to launch a new professional football league in Pakistan, stating that the initiative will benefit the entire football ecosystem.
Speaking exclusively in Karachi, Mohsen Gilani clarified that the upcoming league will not follow a franchise-based model like the Pakistan Super League, but instead will operate under a unique PFF-style club-based structure.
PFF Professional Football League – A Club-Based Model
President According to the PFF , the new Pakistan Professional Football League will be structured around clubs rather than franchises. This approach aims to strengthen grassroots football, encourage club development, and create a sustainable football culture in the country.
We are going to organize a professional football league that will benefit everyone. It will not be PSL-style; it will be PFF-style.
Focus on National Men’s & Women’s Teams
The PFF leadership stated that their primary focus remains on improving both the men’s and women’s national teams. Pakistan currently has an experienced head coach, Nolberto Solano, whose expertise the federation intends to fully utilize.
To prepare for upcoming international fixtures, including matches against Myanmar, Solano has decided to begin the national training camp earlier than planned.
Infrastructure Development & Mini Pitches
Gilani also revealed that the federation is actively working on football infrastructure development. Already Several mini-pitches are being installed across the country, with two already completed. This initiative aims to promote grassroots football and provide better training facilities.
Confidence Ahead of Myanmar Clash
Discussing international competition, Gilani said Pakistan performed well against Afghanistan and believes Myanmar is a comparable opponent.
He expressed confidence that Pakistan can secure a victory, adding that team selection decisions will rest entirely with the coach, who has the federation’s full support.
Strengthening FIFA Relations
The PFF President highlighted improved relations with FIFA, stating that stronger ties have made it easier for the federation to function effectively and implement reforms
Pakistan-India Football & Regional Cooperation
Gilani also noted that Pakistan and India recently played a futsal match in Thailand and that discussions regarding the SAFF Championship are ongoing with the government.
He stressed that football can serve as a bridge between Pakistan and India, helping promote a positive global image of Pakistan through sports diplomacy.
Overseas & Local Players,No Distinction
Addressing the debate about overseas players, Gilani stated clearly:
- If a player is eligible under FIFA rules, they are a Pakistani footballer.
- There should be no difference between local and foreign-based players.
- The coach will decide team selection based on merit.
Two-Year Vision for Pakistan Football
PFF President Gilani expressed optimism that within two years, visible improvement will be seen in Pakistan’s football performance. He also praised the Under-17 team’s progress, noting that these young talents will soon move up to the senior level.
