Kate Moss Carries a Birkin Bag the Way It Was Intended

Email : 1

This summer, celebrities are busy having a glorious euro-summer. The Beckhams! Margot Robbie! You’re simply not an A-lister if you’re not touching down in Spain or France these past few months, and the latest notable name to get into vacation mode is none other than Kate Moss. Because even catwalk and campaign stars need some well-deserved R&R.

Earlier today, the supermodel was spotted in Formentera, Spain (jealous—just think of that Mediterranean sea). And, as one would expect, Moss was seen deplaning in a chic travel look: a flowy black maxi dress with cut-outs and lace detailing, piled-on layers of gold necklaces and classic little ballet flats. But it was her choice of a travel bag that ultimately caught our eye. This was no practical duffel or carry-on bag. No, no, Moss opted for carting around a luxurious black Hermès Birkin bag, complete with gold hardware (to match the jewels, of course).

While a Birkin bag these days can easily run you upwards of $30,000 (rare or exotic style can go for even more than that), Moss didn’t treat her Birkin like some precious gem. Instead, she filled it to the brim—possibly packing it with her water bottle, books, chargers, and whatever else you need for a long-haul flight. Moss schlepping around her Birkin like it’s any ol’ beater bag is precisely how the bag was intended to be used: The style was modeled after fashion icon Jane Birkin, after all, who famously ran her Birkins to the ground. (Her original 1984 Birkin prototype, covered in scuffs and scratches, sold at auction for $10.1 million.)

Call us crazy, but it’s a sign of true style to break in one’s lavish designer pieces. It’s just fashion—things are meant to be worn and used! How boring would it be to have a classic Birkin bag just sitting pristine in a closet, collecting dust? Moss’s wardrobe is well-worn and well-loved. That’s why she’s practically coined the term “model off-duty”—she always delivers high-fashion, even on her days off, while at the airport.
