The club said in an announcement on their website: “Newport County is delighted to unveil the club’s limited-edition Imperium kit, created exclusively for the historic pre-season fixture against AS Roma at Rodney Parade.
“Inspired by the iconic colours of Rome and Newport’s own Roman history, the one-off design features a bespoke Roman-inspired pattern throughout the shirt, celebrating one of the most unique occasions in the club’s history.
“With only a limited amount of stock available, the Imperium kit has been produced as a special collector’s item to commemorate the visit of one of Europe’s most famous clubs to South Wales.
“The design also celebrates Newport’s connection to Roman Britain. Just a few miles from Rodney Parade lies Caerleon, home to the archaeological remains of the Legionary Fortress of Isca Augusta and one of the best-preserved Roman sites in Britain. The historic landmark provides a fitting link for the visit of one of Italy’s most iconic football clubs.
“Newport County would like to thank Configur, the club’s official Data and AI Partner, who feature as the front-of-shirt sponsor for this special edition kit.
“The club would also like to thank Mono Metals, who feature on the back of the shirt, alongside Ostuni and Vincor Developments, who both feature on the sleeve, and JUS, who feature on the shorts and also support this unique occasion as a kit partner.
“The visit of AS Roma promises to be a memorable occasion for supporters, with the Italian giants expected to bring a host of international talent to Rodney Parade. Fans could see players including Paulo Dybala, Gianluca Mancini, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Niccolò Pisilli in action as Newport County takes on one of European football’s biggest names.
“Tickets for the fixture are now extremely limited, with only a small number remaining.
“With adult tickets starting from just £15, supporters are encouraged to secure their place now to avoid disappointment and be part of a historic night at Rodney Parade.

@edward_w97: There’s loads of highlights with this. The Wolves shirt on the bedroom wall. The man’s white shirt which makes him look like a Subway employee. I love this though, zooming in on the Austrian Alps and suddenly appearing in Rome. Please stop making AI slop.
@NCAFCThoughts: AI slop. Don’t even care about the kit, that is poor from us.
@caerdydd1904: Why does any club think using AI is a good idea, what did they think the reaction would be.
@ScottPalfrey: How loud do you have to shout that no human will ever resonate with AI on this level 😭 🤦♂️ It’s unlikely a human making this will call them Roma FC or have two Wolves shirts instead of Newport ones…
@ExiledBen: Once again the club shows how far removed from the fans it is. Although I think AI can be used for good reasons, when it comes to replacing the creative expression of individuals with soulless crap I have no time for it. Nice shirt though.
@CaitBennett_: 😬 we have so much local talent that would give anything for an opportunity to produce content for our club and this is what we get. Sad. Who thought this would go down well??
@murphystanacc: We are entering a wave where graphic designers and media teams will be reduced because clubs will force AI into the plans. Instead of having genuine people who went to uni and got a degree. They’re gonna cook the earth from the inside out. Any club using AI regularly needs fines
@ellisrhysking: Thoughts & prayers with the Comms/Media Team who probably all knew how much this slop would bomb, but were forced to publish it anyway
@diesel_y2j: Massive overreaction to this imo. Yes it’s AI slop but it’s clearly stated and part of the sponsorship. Best of all it highlights perfectly why human creators will always be better. Absolutely no way does a human make those glaring errors.
@CymroCam: If the reaction to the first instance is lax then it becomes infinitely more difficult to stop further usage of it. Knowing just how much the fan base detests the usage of AI drastically decreases the chance they use it going forward.
@BLFNCAFC: Ruined my afternoon, my day, my week, my month, my entire fucking year. Whoever gave this the green light, take a long look at yourself in the mirror cause this is shambolic
@diesel_y2j: Fully agree if it’s trying to be passed off as proper design work but it’s clearly stated it’s part of a contract with an AI company. I hate gambling but understand that clubs/leagues/sports partner with betting firms and have to advertise them.
@kaybhafc90: Not really. The best way to openly show displeasure at AI is actively voicing it. If you stay silent companies will think it’s fine and continue to use it. And as a creative it’s really jarring when people see our anger at an ‘overreaction.’ We’re being forced out of work.
@William_Downs_: Whoever signed off on this has had an absolute mare how hard would it be to film a video at the Roman remains in caerleon ? Very poor from AI looks like a wolves video such a shame this has backfired
@swearimnotpaul: You’ve had a mare here, lads
