How New York Celebrated Spain’s World Cup Victory

After a final full of tension—and, on occasion, full-on physical fighting—it was Spain that emerged victorious on Sunday, besting Argentina to claim the FIFA World Cup title for only the second time in history. (Their first World Cup win came just 16 years ago, when La Roja beat the Netherlands in South Africa.)

As fans of Team Spain made a joyful noise at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, about 11 miles due southeast, in lower Manhattan, the city streets erupted in red and gold. Photographer Poupay Jutharat was on the scene outside La Nacional, on West 13th Street, after Sunday’s final whistle; here’s what she saw.
