As a third-generation Angeleno, Hannah Einbinder reps her city hard. “I pledge allegiance to the United States of Los Angeles,” she declares to Chloe on the latest episode of The Run-Through. “I love LA from the tip to the tail.”

Right now, Einbinder is making the rounds on one of her biggest press tours to date, promoting Jane Schoenbrun’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. Einbinder stars in the film as Kris, a young, queer director working to revive a slasher franchise.

Prior to making the film, slashers were a bit of a blind spot for Einbinder, though she was well-versed in the horror genre more broadly; Silent Hill, she claims, is the scariest movie she’s seen. “I see a huge link between comedy and horror,” she observes, noting that Camp Miasma is as funny as it is scary. “I think that it kind of creates the same thing in the body—like, this build-up of tension with this big release. I think that’s why you see so many comedians go in that direction. Like, you look at Jordan Peele and that, to me, makes so much sense.” In fact, Schoenbrun has a comedy background themself, having done sketch comedy at UCB many moons ago.

Einbinder hasn’t yet settled on her look for the Camp Miasma premiere, but she is already plotting how she’ll accessorize; she intends to visit a certain New York City-based nail artist to get a bloody, slasher-style manicure.

As a major Hacks fan, Chloe is also keen to discuss Ava Daniels and Deborah Vance. Though their show has come to an end, Einbinder is happy to report that she and Jean Smart are in regular contact, sharing memes. (“She’s absolutely out of control,” Einbinder says.)

Einbinder won her first Emmy for the series back in the fall, and when asked where she displays it, she sheepishly reveals that she keeps it tucked away. There was a precedent for this: her grandfather was a decorated war hero, and when he died, the family found all of his medals in a manila envelope in a drawer. This made an impression. “I thought he was so swag for doing that,” Einbinder says.
