Jane Austen had a special knack for writing about sisters, portraying all the affection, frustration, competition, and alienation that can exist among daughters with great sensitivity—and no small amount of humor—throughout her fiction.

Indeed, Austen’s first published novel, Sense and Sensibility, is as much concerned with whom the elder Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, ultimately marry as it is with how their dramatically different personalities manifest themselves (one has the sense, the other the sensibility) and shape their relationship. As Daisy Edgar-Jones, who plays Elinor in Georgia Oakley’s forthcoming adaptation of the book, put it to British Vogue: “This really feels like a love story between sisters.”
